Along with thousands of locals, donut devotees, and world travelers, I’m in love with this iconic New England doughnut shop that has received major attention in recent years. The Delios family purchased Kane’s in 1988 from original owners Bob and June Kane, and despite recent upgrades, the classic donut shop from 59-years ago is still evident today. The Delios siblings, Paul, Stephen, Catherine, Maria, and Peter Jr., start arriving at 2AM to be ready for the day’s first customers, making Kane’s perfect for folks working wee-hour shifts.
Three signature items you have to try if you’re a first-time visitor to Kane’s: a honey-dipped donut, a cake-style donut, and a piece of a coffee roll. The shop offers much more than its nationally recognized donuts, including their hub-cap sized coffee rolls, created by Peter Sr. when he took over the shop. Yet another must-have at Kane’s, the treat is perfect for gatherings with friends and family.
Kane’s has certainly earned it’s “world-famous” tagline due to the popularity of its honey-dipped donut, however, the Delios family is proud of its many hidden gems and new products added into the rotation.

This is a place where everything feels right from its location to the selection of donuts to its other offerings during the day. This is a must-stop anytime you’re in the Beverly Farms area. They just recently celebrated their anniversary, and they are continuing to keep regular and drop-in customers satisfied.
Half Baked calls themselves a café, but I really think of it as a donut shop because they’re just so damn good! This cute, vibrant bakery is located in the heart of Beverly Farms at the start of West Street, and they are serving up a pretty great lineup of regular donuts as well as seasonal & specialties. The donuts are hand-cut each donut, and they make everything that goes in or on them. Their motto is simple: If we can make it better in-house, we do. They also do their best to source the best ingredients the North Shore has to offer. Their Go Local approach means a new menu with a new season. They are even dedicated to being 100% peanut and tree nut free.
It’s also an amazing place to grab lunch and pretty much every other craving you have in between. Absolutely everything is made by hand, and they go as far as roasting and braising their own meats as well as making all their own sauces and dressings!

A truly local joint, this donut shop is near perfection. When in Salem, I always make it a point to stop by Ziggys to grab one of their fantastic donuts. While their selection is a bit limited when compared with some larger chains or other local shops, their classic glazed, chocolate glazed, and jelly donuts are simply some of the best you’ll ever have.
Fair prices drives in customers, so be sure to visit early and often to ensure you get to enjoy your favorite treat at Ziggys and Sons. With a second location in Peabody on Lowell Street, it’s become a lot easier to enjoy their delicious donuts!

With daily special doughnuts, Donna’s is reminiscient of the classic-donuts so many devotees and aficionados search for far and wide. While so many reviews online discuss poor customer service, it’s simply all about the doughnuts for me, and Donna’s are top-notch.
With unique options and toppings unlike no other shop around the region, the choices are numerous and delectable. What’s better? Their coffee is also out of this world! Be sure to get their early because their selection of scrumptious treats sell out swiftly.

Heav’nly Donuts in Amesbury, Metheun, North Reading, Haverhill, & Lawrence
I know what you’re thinking: Heav’nly Donuts is a chain, and NoBo is supposed to be all about promoting a local lifestyle. In our humble opinion, Heav’nly Donuts is another great business that is certainly locally driven, offering quality, hand-cut donuts. Each of their locations’ experienced staff knows how to roll, glaze, and hand-cut donuts so many of the big chains have forgotten.
The chain has been serving coffee and donuts for over thirty years across the northern communities of Massachusetts and other locations in southern New Hampshire, and they’re certainly doing something right.
