Cambridge Health Alliance Receives Schwartz Center Grant to Promote Compassionate Care
Cambridge, MA – The Schwartz Center for Compassionate Healthcare, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening the relationship between patients and their healthcare providers, has awarded Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA) with a grant to promote compassionate care. The $35,000 grant is one of seven, totaling $227,660, that were given to healthcare organizations in six states across the country.
With the support of the grant, CHA, which operates three hospital campuses and a network of primary and specialty care practices in Cambridge, Somerville, and Boston’s metro-north communities, will develop a compassionate care core curriculum for medical residents and clinical staff. The initiative will use patient stories from CHA’s Patient and Family Advisory Council and video vignettes of culturally diverse patients to further promote its system-wide efforts to provide care in a patient-centered medical home model.
“Engaging our patients and communicating their experiences through the new curriculum will serve as a powerful learning tool as we strive to improve our patients’ experience of care,” said Deborah Murphy, RN, site administrator of CHA’s Whidden Hospital campus in Everett, who will lead the initiative. “This program will be a key component of our training program for new staff.”
Schwartz Center grants are intended to improve communication skills, cultural competency, spirituality, and end-of-life care. In addition, for the past several years, the Center has encouraged grant proposals to support programs that utilize patients and family members as educators. Since 1997, the Schwartz Center has awarded more than $2 million in grants to healthcare organizations throughout the U.S.
