By Keith Spencer
Today marks the 5th Annual National Get Outdoors Day, a new annual event created to encourage Americans to take part in healthy, active outdoor fun. Participating partners from around the nation will offer opportunities for families to experience classic and non-traditional outdoor activities.
According to the organization’s website, the prime goals of the day are reaching first-time visitors to public lands and reconnecting youth to the great outdoors.
Participants from federal agencies, nonprofit organizations and the recreation industry with events mixing information centers and activities. Many sites also plan on providing photo opportunities with characters like Smokey Bear, Woodsy Owl and other interesting creatures to help connect youth to nature. Other features include ways to improve healthy living habits, from sustainability to good nutrition.
Last year, more than 50 official GO Day sites welcomed thousands of new faces to the great outdoors.
