May 14, 2012
UNITED STATES – Jacob and Sophia are America’s most popular baby names for 2011. This marks the thirteenth consecutive year Jacob has taken the top honors, however, Sophia overtakes Isabella after a two-year reign.
In all, just one new name for both males and females broke through last year’s top ten for the new rankings which were released by the Social Security Administration.
Mason went from 12 to 2, and had only recently cracked the top 25 until 2010. In a press release, the SSA suggests its popularity may be attributed to celebrity power, including reality TV star Kourtney Kardashian’s son. and as a tribute to Green Bay Packer kicker Mason Crosby.
The two names with the biggest jump in popularity in the Top 500 are Brantley and Briella.
Social Security Commissioner Michael J. Astrue is also apparently happy that American icon Elvis is back in the top 1,000, climbing to 904.
“Last year I was all shook up when Elvis dropped way down below the top 1,000, but Elvis is back into the promised land of the top 1,000, and that’s all right.”
Social Security started compiling baby name lists in 1997, and the agency’s website offers lists of baby names for each year since 1880. To look up names and compare year-to-year statistics of baby names, visit www.socialsecurity.gov.
