Middlesex DA: Malden shooting following Saugus bank robbery ends with fatality, two arrests

MALDEN– According to a release from the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit, both the Malden and Saugus Police Departments, and the FBI Bank Robbery Task Force are conducting an investigation into the facts and circumstances surrounding a fatal police-involved shooting that occurred late yesterday afternoon on Broadway in Malden.

“This remains an active and ongoing multi jurisdictional, multi agency collaborative investigation,” said Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone.

At approximately 4:48PM, Saugus Police received 911 calls reporting an armed bank robbery in progress at the Saugusbank on the Lynn Fells Parkway in Saugus.  Three known suspects allegedly fled the scene to a parking lot on Broadway in Malden where they exited their vehicle.

Initial reports indicated that shortly after 5PM, responding officers from both the Saugus and Malden Police Departments located the suspects in a nearby parking lot at 500 Broadway in Malden. Gunfire was exchanged and one suspect was struck, who was later transported to Massachusetts General Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

The deceased has been identified as William Eekasala, 35, of East Boston.

Two additional suspects were also apprehended, and are in police custody. They have been identified as Michael Ginnietti, 38, of Winthrop, and Gabriel Megna, 48.  Ginnietti was charged with armed robbery out of Saugus.   Megna was charged with armed carjacking, assault with a dangerous weapon and receiving a stolen motor.

The circumstances of the shooting incident remain under investigation, and the justifiability of the police involved in the shooting will be investigated by the District Attorney’s Office per protocol.

The investigation remains active and ongoing, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
