Senator Sal DiDomenico Supports a Property Tax Work-Off Program for Local Veterans
BOSTON – Senator Sal DiDomenico announced last week that he has co-sponsored “An Act to reduce the property tax liability in exchange for volunteer service for veterans,” which would allow local veterans to volunteer in exchange for a reduction on their property taxes.
DiDomenico also met with Veterans representatives from Everett, Revere, and Chelsea, communities the Senator represents, to discuss the potential benefits of the initiative.
This new program would be subject to local adoption, and could allow a veteran to reduce their liability up to $750.
Many cities and towns within our Commonwealth currently offer a tax work-off program for seniors, and this would expand the program to allow returning veterans to ease their property tax burdens.
“This program will significantly benefit both our local heroes and our communities,” said Sen. DiDomenico.
“Veterans can garner useful skills and build their resume, while municipalities can maintain programs and services that are at risk because of budget deficits. We owe our veterans a great deal of gratitude and I hope that this program will help those unable to immediately secure employment upon their return.”
The bill has been referred to the Joint Committee on Revenue.
