Tuesday, 12/6/11: NoBo Newsworthy Wrap-Up

MASSACHUSETTS – Missing teens found. Mumbles pushes for Eastie. Is cold weather finally on its way? Here’s a look at today’s top stories for the NoBo region. Enjoy the rest of your evening!

1. Two missing teens from the North Shore towns of Wenham and Manchester-by-the-Sea were found at the Occupy Newark encampment in New Jersey late last night. The teens went missing after leaving their homes and boarding a train at South Station on Sunday. They turned themselves into officials on Monday evening after being convinced to do so by an Occupy member. The teens have been identified as Wenham’s Laura Dixon, 14, and Manchester’s Connor Southard, 13. Officers from local, state, and federal agencies from Wenham to New Jersey

2. Mayor Menino made yet another push today to bring a casino to East Boston’s Suffolk Downs, likely the result of this weekend’s highly publicized meeting between New England Patriots Owner Bob Kraft and Las Vegas casino mogul Steve Wynn. The two proposals would face off due to restrictions set by the casino bill, vying for the greater Boston location. Menino said the proposal to bring a casino to Suffolk Downs “makes sense” and would be “natural”, due to its close proximity to the airport, the convention center, and the state’s largest community.

3. According to the Malden Patch site, a resident of the city who survived the Warsaw Ghetto during the Nazi Holocaust died last week. Sevek “Joe” Fishman was 93, and well-known for his business, Fishman Tailor Quality Plus on Summer Street. According to archives at the US Holocaust Memorial Museum, Fishman and his late wife Lonia – whom he married in Warsaw – escaped the ghetto for her hometown of Wegrow, where a peasant couple agreed to hide them on their property.

4. Like all good things, the latest stretch of unusually warm weather will come to an end tomorrow, with cooler temperatures and the potential for snow in the evening hours according to NECN. Expect lows in the 30’s tonight, and highs stretching into the low 40’s tomorrow. Sleet and freezing rain may be scattered throughout the area on Wednesday evening with lows in the 30’s again.

5. Two postal service sites in the NoBo Region are on the chopping block, after the struggling USPS announced a series of cutbacks, closures, and delivery changes affecting customers nationwide.
